April 25th- I was fortunate to be able to tag along with members of Worcester Rescue 1. Today was Group 3’s turn at technical rescue training at the DCU Center. Today’s drill involved members of the Technical Rescue Team comprised of Rescue 1, Engine 5 and Ladder 4. The drill simulated an injured rigger on the narrow steel high above the arena floor.

One of the members had to climb up to the bottom of the roof on narrow steel girders and set up a safety line. Then lower themselves to the victim and attach the victim to the safety line and lower them safely to the arena floor. Now it sounds easy enough but I assure you it is much more complicated than it sounds. Lots of safety and preparation go into a rescue maneuver like this. This was a great practical drill.

After the victim was lowered to the ground other members were allowed the opportunity to be lowered to the ground if they wish.
