Worcester Police received a report of a tractor trailer lodged under the infamous Providence and Worcester Railroad bridge on Cambridge Street at the intersection of Kansas Street. Despite all the signage and warning devices trucks hit this bridge on a regular basis.

While the police department was responding they started to receive word there were hazardous materials in the truck that were leaking out. This initiated a fire department response. Once the fire department arrived they checked the placard on the truck and immediately started to establish an evacuation area while the contents of the truck could be pinned down. A tier 1 response from the state hazmat team was requested.

As the incident grew more area streets were closed and the hazmat response was upgraded to a tier 2 bringing in more resources. The railroad was requested to remove a train on the tracks above the bridge which was also carrying hazardous materials.

The area remained closed down throughout the night as the situation was mitigated.
