April 30th- Here is another one for the books. Just after noontime I was headed over to Paidge Avenue in Brooklyn. FDNY has a storage garage there. I was going to see if there were any rigs outside to photograph.
I drove down Greenpoint Avenue and as I took a right Provost Street I see smoke coming up over a fence at a scrap yard. I figured a truck had just started and was smoking or something. As I drove down the block the smoke got thicker and darker.
I pulled over and grabbed the cameras and started to walk up. Some of the workers were on their phones, assuming they were calling it in. I found out later they weren’t calling it in. The calls actually came from a few blocks away reporting smoke from a roof.
The workers opened the gate and there was a roll off dumpster sailing. They actually tried to hit it with a few extinguishers before the first due companies arrived.
They ended up using all hands minus the rescue and the squad. They also used the tower to overhaul the dumpster, that was something to see.
I was able to capture a lot of working faces at that job.
