Spencer firefighters were called to the First Congregational Church at 207 Main Street for a fire alarm.
A quick moving thunderstorm had just passed thru the area.
There was nothing showing on arrival. As crews started to check the building there as smoke reported coming from the back of the church and the steeple.
It wasn't long before the church was fully involved.
The church was about 150 years old.
The cause of the fire was determined to be a lightning strike.
